Virtual reconstruction (by microtomography) of the external (left) and internal (right) morphology of a fossil specimen from the Gabonese site. This complex and organized multicellular macrofossil was found on a fossiliferous site in Gabon, in sediments 2.1 billion years old. Fossil remains of an impressive variety of complex colonial organisms have been discovered, the oldest documented to date, of various shapes and sizes, sometimes reaching 10 to 12 cm and a density of more than 40 specimens per meter square.
